Astrology & Modern Horoscope
The word horoscope comes from the Greek words:
- horo = time or hour
- skopus = to observe or focus on
Astrology means the study (logia) of the stars (astro).
So, a horoscope means “marking a time based on the stars.” Modern astrology uses the stars to guess your future. But is this what the zodiac was originally made for?
What is the Zodiac? Where Does it Come From?
The 12 zodiac signs are groups of stars (called constellations) that people have seen in the sky for thousands of years. These stars form shapes like a lion (Leo) or a virgin woman (Virgo).
The oldest book in the Bible, the book of Job, says that God created these stars and constellations:
He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.
Job 9:9
The prophet Amos also says:
He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns midnight into dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land — the Lord is His name.
Amos 5:8
These constellations have been around for a very long time. The book of Job is over 4000 years old, so the zodiac constellations must have been with us before then.
In the first century CE, a great Jewish historian named Josephus said that Adam and Seth studied the stars. He wrote:
They also were the inventors of that peculiar sort of wisdom which is concerned with the heavenly bodies, and their order.
Antiquities II i
These passages tell us that the early people used the stars, but not in the way people do today with horoscopes. They used the stars to remember God’s promises.
Horoscope & Zodiac from Creator Himself
The Bible says the stars were made to be signs. They were not made to tell you if you will have luck or love. They were made to tell a visual story and to guide us to God’s plan.
We see this from the creation account at the beginning of the Bible. During the six days of creation, it says:
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years…
Genesis 1:14
This means the stars help us know about God’s plan for our future, not our daily fortunes like modern astrology suggests. The real purpose of the zodiac is to help us see God’s bigger story of events planned by God.
The 12 zodiac signs tell a message, like pictures in the sky. They are not about your birth month; they are about God’s plan for the world.
Astrology and the Prophets Together
Studying astrology and horoscopes does not tell us all of the events planned by God. To understand God’s plan we must read the written details in the bible to understand more.
An example of this is with the birth of Jesus Christ. When Jesus was born, wise men from the East came looking for Him because they saw His star. The Gospel records how these men understood his birth by studying the stars.
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.
Matthew 2:1–2
The stars told the Magi someone special was born, (the Christ), but they did not know where. For that, they needed the Bible:
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.‘
Mathew 2:3-6
So, the stars showed the sign, but the Prophets gave the details. We need both the signs in the stars (from astrological horoscopes) and the written Word of God to understand the full message.
The Beginning of the Zodiac Story
The Zodiac story invites you to participate in the cosmic plan of the Creator. Today, many horoscopes begin with Aries, but ancient records show the zodiac started with Virgo, the virgin Woman (see here for details from Esna Zodiac).
So we begin the Zodiac story at Virgo.
The Constellation Virgo
Let’s look at the constellation Virgo. Virgo is a picture of a young woman, a virgin, holding a seed (grain). The brightest star in Virgo is Spica, and it represents that seed.

But if you look at the stars in Virgo, you cannot see a woman. You would never guess it’s a virgin holding a seed. This image had to come from somewhere before the stars were connected to it.
Where did this idea come from?

Virgo in the ancient Egyptian Zodiac
The photos below shows ancient Zodiac references in the Egyptian Temple in Dendera, dated to 1st century BCE. The image on the left shows Virgo circled in red along with the other zodiac signs (12 total). The image on the right shows the zodiac images more clearly.
On the right you see that the Virgo holds a seed of grain. This seed of grain is the star Spica, the brightest star in the Virgo constellation.

Here is Spica in a photo of the night sky. The Virgo stars are connected by lines, and the connected lines for the Virgo constellation.

The idea of a virgin Woman with a seed of grain – or sometimes an ear of corn – was not created from looking at the stars themselves. The image that represents the Virgo constellation (the virgin with the seed of grain) was thought of before and was placed on the constellation.
Where did this imagery come from, and who thought the virgin with the seed of grain should represent Virgo in the stars?
Virgo Story from Beginning
The meaning of Virgo goes all the way back to the beginning of the Bible, in Genesis.
When Adam and Eve sinned, God spoke to Satan (the serpent) and gave a promise:
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.
Genesis 3:15

This was a prophecy. God promised that a woman would have a child (a seed) who would defeat Satan. The woman would be a virgin, since no man is mentioned.
This matches the sign of Virgo – the virgin woman with a seed. That seed is Jesus, born of the virgin Mary. Jesus came to defeat Satan and bring salvation to people.
The coming of the Christ from a virgin was announced at the beginning of time, as explained more fully here. The first humans, to remember the Creator’s promise, created Virgo with her seed (Spica) and placed her image in the constellation so that their descendants would remember the promise.
So Virgo in the sky is not about love or fortune. It is a sign that points to Jesus, the promised one from the very beginning.
Jesus and Your Virgo Horoscope
Jesus even talked about this “seed” when He said:
Jesus replied, “The hour (horo) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
John 12:23–24
Jesus was talking about Himself. He is the seed (like Spica in Virgo). He had to die, but by dying, He would achieve a great victory and bring new life to many people – the “many seeds.”
Jesus came at ‘the’ hour, as this ‘seed’ of the virgin had come at a specific hour (horo). This was His special hour (horo) – the right time in history. He said this so we could mark (skopus) that hour and follow the story by reading the horoscope he set out.
Just like horoscope means to “mark the time,” Jesus marked His time and gave it meaning for us. The twelve signs of the zodiac are for all people, not only one based on your birth month. The 12 zodiac signs form a complete story to guide your life, if you choose to follow it, to an eternal life and lasting relationship with the Zodiac’s Creator.
Your Daily Virgo Horoscope Reading of the ancient Zodiac
The 12 zodiac signs are not just for fun or daily fortune. They tell the full story of God’s plan for all people. This is your true horoscope – not based on your birthday, but based on faith and the journey to eternal life.
The Bible sets forth sacred hours and time periods, invite us to note them, and live accordingly. Since horoscope = horo (hour) + skopus (mark to observe) we can do that with the zodiac using the written record to explain the Zodiac constellations more fully. Jesus himself marked the Virgo + Spica ‘hour’ for us.
So what does the Virgo sign say to you?
Be careful not to miss that ‘hour’ (horo) declared by Jesus because you are too busy every day chasing unimportant things. Because of that, many will miss out on becoming the ‘many seeds’. Life is full of mysteries, but the key to eternal life and true wealth is to unlock the mystery of the ‘many seeds’ for yourself. Ask the Creator daily to guide you to understanding. Since He put the Sign in the Stars of Virgo as well as in His written record, he will give you insight if you ask, knock and seek for it. In a manner, the Virgo characteristics compatible for this are curiosity and an eagerness to dig for answers. If these traits mark you then put it into action by seeking further insight into Virgo.
